Redefining PTSD: What Is It?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychological and neurological response that can occur after you witness or endure a deeply distressing event. It isn’t a sign of weakness; it is your nervous system’s way of trying to protect you from a danger that has already passed. When the "fight or flight" response stays active long after the threat is gone, it can disrupt your sleep, your mood, and your relationships.

The Four Dimensions of PTSD Symptoms

Trauma affects everyone differently, but symptoms generally fall into these four categories:

  • Intrusive Memories: Feeling as though you are reliving the event through vivid flashbacks, distressing dreams, or intense emotional reactions to reminders.

  • The Guarded Mind (Avoidance): Going to great lengths to stay away from people, places, or conversations that might spark a memory of the trauma.

  • Shifts in Perspective: Developing a heavy sense of guilt, losing interest in hobbies you once loved, or struggling to feel positive emotions like joy or trust.

  • Physical & Emotional Reactivity: Feeling constantly "on edge" (hypervigilance), being easily startled, experiencing sudden outbursts of anger, or having trouble concentrating.

What Triggers the Response?

Trauma isn't defined by the event itself, but by how your mind processes it. Common catalysts include:

  • Difficulties faced during military service.

  • Surviving accidents or natural disasters.

  • Experiencing physical, emotional, or personal violations.

  • Witnessing a tragedy or losing a loved one suddenly.
